How To Make Your URLs SEO Friendly

Earlier i have posted two posts in SE Optimization Series which was about Optimizing Title Tags and Using Meta Description to Attract Organic Traffic. But today i am here with some best techniques which should be used in making your blog’s URLs Search Engine Friendly. Many peoples thinks that URL doesn't plays any role in overall SEO of a website/blog and they are totally wrong. URLs are shown in search results and majority of visitors decide which link they have to click by just looking into URL and description of the link. Mostly webmasters also follow this rule because they already know that which website is going to satisfy their needs. So making your URLs SE friendly is as important as posting articles to your blog.
I will recommend you to first read these two articles because these articles will tell you the basics of SEO and will let you take care of your blog.
  1. Optimize Title For Better Indexing and Rankings
  2. Use Meta Description To Attract Organic Traffic
After reading these two post, you are now ready to go step one more step in SEO ladder. So carefully read the below mentioned tips and techniques and apply them to your blog and you will definitely reach your goal shortly.

Shorter Is Better

You must have heard this because this is the very common technique and it also work till date. Because of the shorter length of your URL, it will be fully visible in search result and  will increase the click through rate of your blog. Short length URLs are easier to copy and paste in E-mails, Tweets and other shares. On other hand you could also use a long descriptive URL but it is mostly possible that people will not click the URL because they can’t read the whole URL.
Make It Shorter and Readable Also
Making your link only Shorter will not help you but also make it readable to others. If your url will shorter and readable then the chances of click will be increased. Below is a example of shorter but unreadable URL.

Use Keywords In Limit

I have already discussed a lot about keywords and their impact on Search Engine Optimization. In one hand it is very important to do but on other hand , overuse of keyword will kill your blog for ever. Using Google Adword’s Keyword Planner is best because it provides the exact and accurate result. It is recommended to use a strong keyword in the URL of your post. You can also use a long tail keyword but make sure that your URL not stretch too much. If your page contains some specific terms then don’t forget to mention that in your URL.

Make Your URL Static

Static URL means your URL should not use too much symbols and make it easily readable. Using lot of “?”, “123” and other symbols will make your URL harder to read. You can use “/” for distinguishing labels or  directory and “_”(Underscores) to separate words in your URL, they seems similar like a blank space.

Avoid 404

404 is a not found error. It generally occurs when you removed a content and visitor somewhere found you link and clicked on it. 404 error also harms your Search Rankings but using Google Webmaster Tools you can short out all your 404 error. You can use 301 redirection to overcome this 404 Not Found Error Penalty.

Use 301 Redirection

301 Redirection is a permanent which passes approx. 99% of ranking power to the redirected page. It is the best method to redirect your visitors form old blog to new blog. It not only sends visitors but also gives the ranking of your old page to the new redirected page.

After tweaking your post’s URL will all above methods will make your blog grab more traffic from Search Engine and Social Media.
